Currently, the list of adult and child victims of Paul Mackenzie, a cab driver turned into a false prophet, amounts to 436, 34 of which have been identified, despite the suspension last year to increase exhumations and carry out DNA research.
The cult came to public attention in April 2023, when the first remains were discovered in the Shakahola Forest, where the Good News International Ministries, which encouraged its parishioners to starve themselves to death to meet Jesus Christ, was based.
Subsequent investigations determined that some parishioners who were reluctant to follow the preaching to the letter were beaten to death and, still worse, there were indications of organ sales to hospitals.
That was the impact on public opinion that the Kenyan Government was forced to tighten requirements for the establishment of new religious denominations and to investigate the credentials of their representatives.
