Viktor Koronelli praises Russian community support for Latin America

Havana, May 27 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Ambassador to Cuba Viktor Koronelli stressed the importance of the work of Russian compatriots in Latin America, when many governments are seeking hostility towards Russia, diplomatic sources said on Monday.

The validity of coordinated, friendly and well thought-out work with the activists of the movement of Russian compatriots is more topical than ever, especially now that dozens of States are pursuing a policy that is not only unfriendly, but aggressive against Russia, he assured.

In this way, the diplomat referred to the 16th Regional Conference of Russian Compatriots in Cuba, devoted to the theme of New directions of the Diaspora Movement in Latin America, held from May 26 to 27 at the diplomatic mission of this country.

We are the only embassy that has already twice hosted large-scale activities of Russian compatriots, the diplomat pointed out.

Last year, we hosted the Regional Youth Conference here, and now we are meeting with you,’ the ambassador deemed, who saw this as a sign of confidence in the Russian Embassy.

A senior official of the Federation Council (Senate) stressed the importance of preserving cultural traditions along with the Russian community abroad.

The event included an interesting debate on the role of the Russian Diaspora or communities in Latin America and their participation in cultural exchanges in the country where they are established.

The participants on this occasion in the forum were representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, Chile and Ecuador.

Journalistic sources mention the existence of between 100,000 and 300,000 Russians in Argentina, between 100,000 and 200,000 in Brazil, as well as between 50,000 and 100,000 in Mexico, while the numbers are lower (between 1,000 and 5,000) in other Latin American and Caribbean nations.
