Known as Don Miguel, Cuevas played in the first National Baseball Series wearing the Azucareros team uniform at the age of 26. He remained for 13 seasons as a right-handed hitter.
During his successful career with Azucareros, Orientales, Granjeros, and Camagüey teams, Cuevas left behind an offensive average of 279, 880 hits, 127 doubles, 17 triples, and 83 HR.
He participated in ten foreign events representing Cuba. In the 1963 Pan American Games, he hit three homers in the same game, a record that still stands for those tournaments.
