Cuba seeks alternatives to face energy deficit

Havana, May 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is implementing today actions to face the electricity generation deficit caused by the lack of fuel and maintenance work in its thermal power plants, President Miguel Díaz-Canel said in a conversation with journalist Ignacio Ramonet.

According to the president, the instability in power generation is caused by the existence of a system that has a thermoelectric component, which is solved with the use of domestic crude oil, with a lot of sulfur, and requires systematic maintenance.

He affirmed that Cuba needs more than 300 million dollars a year to maintain this national electro-energy system, and such availability has not existed.

This leads to breakdowns and technological problems more frequently than normal in such a system, he said. He explained that another group of energy production sources are distributed generation engines, used mainly during peak hours, which require diesel and fuel oil, fuel not always available in the country.

In this context, Cuba seeks to promote savings and the development of renewable energy sources, both wind and photovoltaic and biogas, he said.

He informed that Cuba has signed several agreements with other countries that will enable it to produce more than 2,000 megawatts in less than two years, with the aim of having more than 20 percent renewable energy by 2030.

Part of the photovoltaic parks that are being installed will accumulate energy, therefore they will be able to be used in the evening hours, and besides giving us this possibility, they will reduce fuel consumption, he said.

He pointed out that with the use of renewable energy sources, it will be possible to devote more fuel to the economy, especially to food production, agriculture and productive processes which today are very limited mostly because the hydrocarbons are used for electricity generation.

He pointed out that Cuba is also looking for foreign investments to strengthen, update and improve the processing of domestic crude oil in the Cuban refineries, and contribute to solving the energy issue, which has been greatly affected by the intensification of the US blockade.
