Port-au-Prince hoods are increasingly vulnerable, UN warns

United Nations, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Coordinated attacks over several neighborhoods in Haiti´s capital worsen the extremely vulnerable situation of Haitians, the United Nations (UN) warned on Monday.

The UN confirmed that it is presently conducting assessments in different areas such as the commune of Gressier, attacked last Friday in an event of violence that left several houses burned.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) confirmed the incident forced an undetermined number of residents to displace.

About 362,000 Haitians have been forced to leave their homes, half of them children, according to UN figures.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that between March 8 and April 9 some 95,000 people fled the capital, 60% of them to the southern departments.

Despite the volatile situation, humanitarian organizations including the UN Children’s Fund and the World Food Program continue to provide emergency assistance to thousands of people in the capital and other areas of the country.

At least 5.5 million Haitians will need humanitarian assistance in 2024, up from the 5.2 million estimated by the UN.

The agency also warns of a disproportionate burden of the current context on women, after rape rates also skyrocketed.
