Bojador, Algeria, May 3 (Prensa Latina) The 1st Media Conference of Solidarity with the Saharawi People on Friday highlighted the 65-year history of Prensa Latina news agency amid manipulations and possible sieges by power centers and information monopolies.

Ministers of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and speakers from various panels and round tables thanked the Latin American news agency’s experience presented by its president, Luis Enrique González, in this refugee camp, close to the area occupied by Morocco.

Before more than 200 participants, including 120 delegates from 30 countries, González recalled the establishment of Prensa Latina as the main alternative media outlet in Latin America amid campaigns against the new Cuban Revolution.

Prensa Latina not only resisted even the predictions of failure, but it has become the voice of the Global South, in the defense of objective information amid misinformation and fake news, he stressed.

The message from the South needs more articulation and alliances that will make it more solid to overcome the obstacles of manipulation, the president of Prensa Latina noted.

Speaking in one of the panels at the closing session of the Conference, González showed a Prensa Latina that has overcome difficulties and inconveniences, many of them marked by the United States blockade against Cuba, where its headquarters are located.

In response to a question from the moderator, all supports are valid in the work of placing our message from nearly 40 correspondents and various services that make us the main multimedia outlet based in Cuba.

On the day of freedom of expression, the president of Prensa Latina advocated guaranteeing the people’s free and true opinion above the interests of media monopolies and big capital.

According to the ministers of Information and Education of the SADR, Prensa Latina’s experience of resistance and advancement is worth taking into account to break the information blockade of the Western Sahara’s cause.

This conference was called to share criteria and draw up a roadmap on how to overcome the media siege on the Saharawi cause, Nafi Ahmed Mohamed, head of the Union of Journalists and Writers of the SADR, noted.

Among its projections was the creation of a league of journalists in solidarity with the Western Sahara’s cause and more interaction among media and platforms to expand the reach of information about the fight for independence and the recovery of the occupied territories.

The Boujdour camp is located in a desert area in southern Algeria where high temperatures have forced the debates to be suspended from noon until about 6 in the afternoon.
