Manuel Mendive’s first major retrospective to open in Cuba

Havana, May 1 (Prensa Latina) The Havana-based National Museum of Fine Arts and the Mendive Art Project conceived the first major retrospective of artist Manuel Mendive in Cuba, scheduled for May 17 in Havana.

The retrospective will be held at the Cuban Art Building of the Museum, the institution announced on social media.

Mendive (Havana, 1944) is a relevant painter with a strong expression of African roots, especially from the Yoruba culture. He mixes techniques, styles, and colors on several supports and textures.

Canvas, wood, animal skin, and even the human body itself are used to give free rein to the creativity of his extraordinary myths and pictorial narrations.

In the course of his career, Mendive received countless awards, including the third prize at the National Drawing Salon, Havana (1967); the Adam Montparnasse Collective Prize for Young Painters at the 24th Salon de Mai, Paris (1968); and the Prix National at the 2nd International Painting Festival in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France (1970).

Other awards are the Alejo Carpentier Medal of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, Havana (1988), the National Plastic Arts Award, Havana (2001), and the Five Continents’ medal of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2009.
