Progressive International denounces punishment of Global South

Havana, April 29 (Prensa Latina) Countries of the Global South are subject to unilateral sanctions on behalf of an international order based on hegemonic interests, denounced today the general co-coordinator of the Progressive International (PI), Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla.

The activist of Indian origin drew attention to the disrespect for international norms and the proliferation of unilateral economic measures as a political tool by the United States and other actors included in the vision of the West.

“We live in the era of punishment,” said the young woman at an international conference convened by the IP and the National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba to examine the need to establish a New International Economic Order (NIEO).

Cuba, she pointed out, knows this reality well due to Washington’s sanctions with the use of pretexts to justify baseless issues such as the island’s inclusion in the list of States sponsoring terrorism, she exemplified.

Millions of people on the planet live in conditions of food insecurity, while others die from curable diseases, in a world where there is enough food and medicine; that can only be understood by the character of the current global economic and financial order, she reasoned.

According to David Adler, also general co-coordinator of the IP, the composition of the event can ensure an important exchange of ideas, since academics, politicians, diplomats, social activists and economists from 25 countries are present, including South Africa, India , Cuba, Senegal, Brazil and Indonesia.

The meeting in Havana, he estimated, is a reason for encouragement because the Cuban Revolution has not given up and continues to open spaces for dialogue for those who want to fight for the economic liberation of the people.

The communion here of specialists in various areas of knowledge must contribute to the formation of an epistemological and political community for the shared struggle to achieve a new international order, as a premise for a democratic and multipolar world, he considered.
