Venezuelan FM recalls Carnation Revolution

Caracas, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Yván Gil recalled the Carnation Revolution on the 50th anniversary of the military uprising that ended the dictatorship in Portugal.

“A milestone that became a symbol of struggle for freedom and democracy across the world,” the diplomat posted on X.

Gil noted that on this anniversary, we recall the courage of the Portuguese people who flooded Lisbon’s streets with red carnations, “an act as poetic as courageous that triggered the overthrow of a long oppressive and colonialist dictatorship.

May the Carnation Revolution always inspire us to defend the people’s rights,” he said.

After 48 years of dictatorship, the Portuguese people decided to support the peaceful military uprising, in which uniformed men placed red carnations on their rifles’ barrels to demonstrate that they did not want to shoot.
