UN denounces deaths of African migrants in illegal corridor

Geneva, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) At least 24 migrants died and 20 are missing after a shipwreck near the coast of Djibouti, the United Nations confirmed on Thursday, while assessing the crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Two such tragedies in just two weeks highlight the dangers faced by children, women and men on irregular routes, the head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Djibouti, Tanja Pacifico, said.

The IOM global statement further stated that the new incident occurred on April 22, when a boat left from Ras al-Ara, along the coast of Yemen, and capsized near the coastal town of Obock, with at least 77 people on board, including several children.

Thirty-three migrants survived and are currently receiving medical care, food, shelter and psycho-social support at the IOM Migrant Response Center in Obock, while local authorities continue the search and rescue operations, the statement noted.
