Cuba: Casa de las Americas Award focuses on children-youth literature

Havana, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) The 64th edition of the Casa de las Americas Literary Award opens on Wednesday with the lecture "Rumbos de la actual literatura para niños y jóvenes" (Directions of the Current Literature for Children and Youth) at the Manuel Galich Hall of the capital's cultural institution.

The prestigious award is held until Friday, April 26, with keynote speeches and meetings of the jury with the public, among other activities.

Cuban singer-songwriter Liuba María Hevia, Brazilian journalist Ricardo Fernandes, and Dominican storyteller and translator Geraldine de Santis, who comprises the jury for the Children’s and Youth Literature category, will participate in the lecture.

Essayists Arturo Arias (Guatemala), Liliana Bellone (Argentina), and Leonardo Sarría (Cuba) will attend the panel “Contra el cañon” (Against the Canon) at the Manuel Galich Hall an hour later.

The panel, “Aciertos y Deudas de la Escena Latinoamericana en este Cuarto de Siglo” (Achievements and Debts of the Latin American Scene in this Century’s Quarter), was held on Tuesday, in which Venezuelan director and actor Carlos Arroyo, Colombian playwright Carlos Satizábal, and renowned Cuban actor Fernando Hechavarría, all members of the jury in the Theatre category, discussed the issue.

This year, the Casa de las Americas Literary Award calls for four genres: Novel, Theater, Artistic or literary essay, and Literature for children and young people. The countries with more works are Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Cuba.

The Casa de las Américas” cultural institution celebrates its 65th anniversary on April 28, and the literary award is one of the leading protagonists.
