The second chief of the National General Staff of the Civil Defense of Cuba, Luis Macareño, leads the delegation to the event, which brings together experts and international organizations in search of a common strategy.
The event, which Cuba is attending for the first time, takes place under the motto “Investing for a more resilient tomorrow”, aims to create a roadmap with ideas that mobilize financing for the public and private sectors based on mitigation of calamities.
This sixth edition is marked by high-level statements on the importance of aligning investment with climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.
Last Monday, the Cuban delegation participated in the fifth meeting of the Governing Council of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). At the meeting, Macareño ratified Cuba’s willingness to share its experiences in protecting people and resources from disasters.
Despite being a small underdeveloped country, subject to more than 60 years of economic, commercial and financial blockade, Cuba developed a national disaster risk reduction management strategy, led by the Civil Defense System, Macareño stressed, and stated that developing nations can access Cuba’s experiences as part of South-South cooperation. He also ratified Cuba’s willingness to share experiences and learn from the teachings of the CDRI.
The head of the Cuban delegation reiterated his gratitude to the government of India and the CDRI for the membership, as well as the invitation to the Governing Council and the sixth International Conference.
