Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, based in Abuja, indicated that, according to an investigation, 80 percent of the homicides and 94 percent of the kidnappings were reported in the northern states of the country.
The source said that the northern state of Borno, considered the cradle of the extremist group Boko Haram, reported the highest number of fatalities, with 517, followed by Benue (313), Katsina (252), Zamfara (212) and Kaduna (206).
Although Minister of Defense Muhammad Badaru has recently stated that the level of security in Nigeria has increased in recent times, various sources consider that the number of victims is still high as a result of attacks by armed gangs on civilian populations.
This situation is also affected by conflicts between farmers and herders, and clashes between communities.
In Nigeria, criminal groups often kidnap people, including politicians, in order to demand ransom from their families.
