This year the slogan for this day proclaimed by the UN is “Planet vs. plastics”, due to the urgent need to end plastics for the sake of human health and the planet and the goal is to achieve a 60 percent reduction of plastic production by 2040.
Humanity currently produces 430 million tons of plastic per year, two-thirds of which is contained in short-lived products that soon become waste and some of that plastic ends up in the food chain, where it can harm human health.
Meanwhile, global warming is one of the greatest threats humanity faces as the devastating effects of global warming become more evident.
Climate change, human-induced changes in nature, as well as biodiversity-disturbing crimes such as deforestation, land-use change, intensive crop and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, may accelerate the pace of the planet’s destruction.
