Uruguay: unionized public workers hold strike nationwide

Montevideo, Apr 18 (Prensa Latina) Ministries, healthcare centers, schools, and other institutions in Uruguay stopped working on Thursday due to the 24-hour nationwide strike of public workers in protest against a new regime of medical certifications.

The State Officials Confederation (COFE), supported by the trade union PIT-CNT, convened the strike and demonstration.

In the health sector, union guards assist emergencies, oncology patients, and people hospitalized, a COFE press release states.

The public radio and television stations do not broadcast official programs, and the Electoral Tribunal and the Attorney General’s Office are closed to the public.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security is also inactive; the same happens in the Ministry of Education and Culture, “where no marriages take place at the Civil Registry,” and the National Library is also closed.

The COFE stated that all unions of the Confederation would massively support the strike.
