More than 160 million people called to vote tomorrow in India

New Delhi, Apr 18 (Prensa Latina) More than 160 million people are summoned to participate tomorrow in the beginning of the elections to the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament), the Electoral Commission of India (ECI) informed.

In a statement on the preparations, the ECI confirmed that 187,000 polling stations will open for the first phase of the general elections to be held in India in seven stages until June 1.

For the custody of the process, 1.800.000 officials were deployed in the 102 districts of 21 states of the country immersed this Friday in the voting of 1,625 candidates, the Commission stressed.

Voters include 84 million men, close to 82.300.000 women and 3.567 million who will participate for the first time, ECI detailed.

Likewise, 1.414 million people over 85 years of age and 1.389 million voters with disabilities were given the option to vote from the comfort of their homes, it added.

Likewise, the territories will be supported by 41 helicopters, 84 special trains and almost 100,000 vehicles to transport electoral and security personnel.

The Electoral Commission of India specified that more than 350 observers will oversee the voting and ballot counting.

It warned that a total of 1,374 interstate and 162 international border checkpoints are keeping a strict watch on any illicit flow of liquor, drugs, cash and bribe incentives.
