UN High Commissioner expresses concerns over the displaced in DRC

Kinshasa, Apr 17 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk visited a camp for displaced people in Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and expressed concern over the situation there, Radio Okapi reported on Wednesday.

On the tour of Bunia, in Ituri province, the UN representative, accompanied by the head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in DRC (Monusco), Bintou Keita, spoke at the Tsere refugee site, which houses over 800 households, with humanitarian workers and Congolese.

Turk considered the situation to be “alarming” and requiring joint efforts by the Government and its partners, including Monusco, to improve the living conditions of those vulnerable people.

It breaks my heart to hear them and know their suffering for not being able to return to their places of origin, he told reporters about the meeting, adding that many expressed their wish that efforts be made to secure their homeland.
