Lopez Obrador notes seriousness of assault on Embassy in Ecuador

Mexico, Apr 16 (Prensa Latina) President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday described the raid on the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador as very serious, and noted that any other complaints about it deserve to be addressed.

In response to a journalist’s question about the lawsuit filed on Monday by Congressman Gerardo Fernández against the Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa before the Attorney General’s Office for the assault on the diplomatic venue, López Obrador said that the citizen has every right to do so.

“We have already presented the complaint to the International Court of Justice. We are going to continue with this process, but any other complaints that are presented in this regard deserve to be addressed. That is my point of view, and let authorities decide,” he stated in his usual press conference.

As part of Mexico’s claim in The Hague last Thursday, the request to declare Ecuador responsible for the damage that the violations of its international obligations have caused and continue to cause to Mexico stands out, as well as the Andean country’s suspension as a United Nations member until a public apology is issued for the invasion of the Mexican mission, and the establishment of a precedent that any State that acts in the same way will be expelled permanently from the world organization.

“If this is not done, the UN will remain like a flower vase, nothing more than decoration, and international law cannot be broken, violated, as Ecuador did, because then it would be the law of the strongest,” the Mexican head of State stressed at the National Palace.

“That is what we are proposing, and defending the right to asylum. Those persecuted for political reasons must be supported, protected by the right to asylum, it is part of our foreign policy tradition and that must be defended,” López Obrador noted.
