Livestock farmers trained in Cuba thanks to FAO’s assistance

Havana, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on Friday endorsed the development of capacities in sheep and goat farming in Cuba.

So far, producers, specialists and technicians in veterinary services in six municipalities of the country were able to strengthen their knowledge thanks to FAO´s support.

According to the institution, the progress is part of a capacity building program within the framework of the project “Strategic support for sustainable food security in Cuba”.

Component number three of this institutional commitment includes the strengthening of the Integrated Knowledge Management System for Sustainable Food Security in Cuba (CONSAS), FAO stated.

According to FAO, the objective of this initiative is to surge high-protain and nutritional food production in local food systems, based on improving culture for management, reproduction and feeding of small livestock, as well as veterinary technical assistance and animal health services.

Current program was the perfect setting for the exchanges of experiences among producers, science and technology entities and university centers.

Experts strongly believe that such links could lead to the application of scientific results in Cuba’s production practices, FAO said.

Among knowledge shared, FAO distinguished the implementation of silvopastoral systems and the use of artificial insemination to improve breeds.

The Cuban Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI), FAO and the European Union (EU) join efforts for deploying the projec with a significant impact on the economic development, sustainability and safety of small livestock in Cuba.
