According to Guardian Media, all the babies were less than 32 weeks old and died between April 2 and 9 in the pediatric intensive care unit of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, and another child is still in critical condition.
In addition, laboratory tests confirmed a strong infection caused by Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Serratia bacteria.
On the other hand, local health authorities indicated in a statement that the babies received high doses of antibiotics and the most advanced therapies, but they had no effect.
Although they affirmed that the doctors kept the parents duly informed, they claim that the true cause of death was concealed from them and demand an investigation because all the children were healthy.
Official statistics place Trinidad and Tobago’s infant mortality rate at 9.75 per every 1,000 live births in 2022, the lowest reported in the Caribbean state in the last 34 years.
