“We do not intend to create alternative formats to the Olympics. For us it is important to preserve the status of the national system, to create and participate in a competitive environment, to let our athletes take part in other competitions: the ALBA Games, the Brics Games,” the Minister stated. Russia will host the Brics Games and the World Friendship Games in 2024. The International Olympic Committee opposes the participation of foreign athletes in the latter, which it considers politicized.
“We see interest from international federations. Usually through diplomatic channels. I can state it without a doubt, we say that we should not be posed a threat to the existing sports system. A country has the right to make its own decision, to choose its own way,” Matytsin stressed.
The Brics Games will be held in the Russian city of Kazan from June 11 to 24. The World Friendship Games will take place from September 15 to 29 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg.
