After a meeting of its Superior Council, the UBA issued a press release stating that “under the current conditions, the possibility of maintaining all activities to guarantee education quality, the continuity of research, extension, and assistance is seriously affected.”
“Public education is a pride of Argentine society; it was based on the pillars of secularism, free education, autonomy, inclusion, teaching of the highest quality, development of research, and commitment to the social environment, and therefore it requires adequate funding for developing its activities,” the text adds.
It also states that the UBA is facing a critical situation due to a decision by the Government of President Javier Milei to maintain the 2023 budget values in 2024 despite an inter-annual inflation of 276 percent.
The document states that this measure puts the UBA at risk of defunding, jeopardizing essential functions, including university and pre-university education, scientific projects, and medical attention to more than half a million patients per year in its hospital centers.
