PARLATINO rejects violation of the Vienna Convention by Ecuador

Panama City, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) PARLATINO condemned the use of force when the Ecuadorian Police broke into the Mexican embassy, which was classified as a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO), based in Panama since 2006, issued a statement saying that it observes these events with great concern, alluding to the decision to invade the Mexican embassy in Quito by the police and using armored cars to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas, to whom Mexico had granted political asylum.

For the regional Legislature, such practices are unacceptable in Latin America and the Caribbean, “where not even the military dictatorships of the 60s and 70s allowed themselves to set such a precedent,” the statement says.

In its message, PARLATINO emphasized that the region was proclaimed a zone of peace, and as such, international differences must be resolved through dialogue and negotiation with strict adherence to International Law.

The organization also invited the Ecuadorian Government to amend the nonsense as soon as possible and urged the National Assembly of Ecuador, an institutional member of PARLATINO, to exercise its authority in order to reverse an event of such magnitude in light of any ideology or party political doctrine.

Following the events, the Government of Mexico declared the severance of relations with Ecuador, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it will appeal to the International Court of Justice to denounce Ecuador for violations of international law.
