Acute food insecurity impacts five million Haitians

United Nations, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) Nearly five million Haitians have been coping with crisis or worsening levels of acute food insecurity in their nation by the time displacement and lack of aid aggravate the situation in the capital, a UN report warned on Friday. The latest analysis of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) grants the situation is worsening in the country, where over 1.6 million people face "emergency" levels of hunger.

According to the UN-backed study, the most severely affected areas are in the Artibonite Valley, the country’s breadbasket, where armed groups have seized agricultural land and stolen crops.

The briefing stated that amid the state of violence, the nation is handling unprecedented levels of hunger.

“Rising hunger is fueling the security crisis that tears the country apart,” World Food Program (WFP) Country Director Jean-Martin Bauer ensured, calling for urgent action and adding that, “waiting to respond on a large scale is not an option.”

The report revealed that 4.97 million Haitians face crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity, which represents stage three or higher in the IPC classification.

According to UN figures, job and income losses have already affected two-thirds of families across Haiti by the latest wave of violence in March, while insecurity is driving up already high fuel and food prices.

From August 2023 to February 2024, the cost of the food basket ramped up by 22 %, leaving millions of Haitians without access to all their products.
