Armenian Parliament ratifies EU mission on border with Azerbaijan

Yerevan, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) The Armenian Parliament on Wednesday ratified an agreement with the European Union (EU) on the status of the EU monitoring mission on the border with Azerbaijan, the Legislature's website informed.

Fifty-seven parliamentarians voted in favor, with no votes against, and 27 lawmakers abstained. The decision has been made, Parliament Deputy Speaker Ruben Rubinyan said.

Some members of the opposition Hayastan (Armenia) faction abstained, and others from the opposition “I Have Honor” bloc skipped the vote.

The decision will take effect after Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signs the document.

The agreement will allow relevant Armenian authorities to view the EU mission, including its units, headquarters and staff, as a representative office with a diplomatic mandate on customs and tax issues.

According to Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, deploying the mission to the border with Azerbaijan will be the first time that the EU, as an institution, will be concerned about Armenia’s security.
