Allegations on Bolsonaro’s involvement in coup highlighted in Brazil

Brasilia, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) Testimonies of high-ranking military and political commanders of the Federal Police (PF), on the involvement of former President Jair Bolsonaro in the coup attempt of January 8, 2023, stood out in Brazil during this week.

Disseminated by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the allegations of former Army and Air Force commanders exposed Bolsonaro’s direct participation in the plot to overturn the results of the October 2022 elections won by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

To the PF, the commanders of the Armed Forces reported that, after the vote, Bolsonaro called the military leadership to establish arrangements for a coup d’état.

Former Army commander Freire Gomes confirmed that the former president himself presented a coup plot and discussed its contents in at least two meetings.

The then commander of the Air Force, Carlos de Almeida Baptista Júnior, also confirmed having attended meetings in which Bolsonaro presented documents with a coup plot.

The far-right politician, according to published statements, did everything possible to stay in power, despite losing at the polls to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
