On his X profile, the head of Government shared a phrase from the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who underlined the importance of that event that ended the El Zanjón Pact, in which Spain, after ten years of war, offered an end of hostilities without solving the colonial situation that had made Cubans take to the arms.

“Fidel: What can be stated is that with the Baraguá Protest… the patriotic and revolutionary spirit of our people reached its peak; and that the flags of the country and the revolution… were placed in its highest seat,” Marrero wrote.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, in turn, highlighted that Antonio Maceo’s dignity, patriotism and revolutionary intransigence in his historic Baraguá Protest are consecrated principles of Cuban revolutionary diplomacy, in the defense of the country’s sovereignty and independence.

The event led by General Antonio Maceo and other senior leaders, officers and soldiers under his command took place in Mangos de Baraguá, an area in the current province of Santiago de Cuba, on March 15, 1878.

That gesture, in the words of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, took the patriotic and revolutionary spirit of the Cuban people to its highest point.
