Sentence in Uruguay for espionage against Frente Amplio senators

Montevideo, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) The former director of the company Vertical Skies, Marcelo Acuña, was convicted for the crime of espionage against Frente Amplio (Broad Front) Senators Mario Bergara and Charles Carrera, it was revealed on Friday.

The legislators were under harassment after denouncing before the courts the agreement between the Uruguayan government and the Belgian multinational Katoen Natie for the extension of the concession of the container terminal in the port of Montevideo until 2081.

Vertical Skies is a firm based in Florida, the United States, and has signed contracts with the Executive Branch in defense and security matters.

The former director of Vertical Skies in Uruguay was indicted on October 10, 2023, for the crime of bribery as co-perpetrator, and was imposed precautionary measures such as fixing his domicile, the impossibility to leave the country and the retention of travel documents.

After an agreement between his defense and the Prosecutor’s Office, he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, which he must serve on probation and community service for eight months.

In addition, he was ordered to pay a fine of 86,000 pesos (just over 2,000 dollars).
