UNRWA calls on the West to resume funding to face of Gaza crisis

Ramallah, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, renewed his call to Western powers to resume financing the organization to face the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Lazzarini thanked Australia on X for restoring the delivery of funds to UNRWA. “I hope that other donors who have temporarily suspended their contributions will make a similar announcement and support the Agency to reverse widespread hunger in Gaza,” he said, warning about the plight of Palestinian refugees during the current crisis in the Gaza Strip, which has been attacked by the Israel armed forces since October 7th of last year.

Days ago, Canada and Sweden announced their decision to once again provide funds to the institution.

UNRWA is under scrutiny following the accusation by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government against 12 of its 13,000 employees for alleged participation in the operation of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) during the events of the “Al-Aqsa Flood”.

Both the agency and the UN announced an immediate investigation, but a group of Western countries, including the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, stopped their funding, although the allegations are yet to be proven.

Last week, Lazzarini warned that dismantling the organization would be a short-sighted measure due to its serious consequences. “The implementation of this plan is already underway with the destruction of our infrastructure throughout the Gaza Strip,” he warned.

According to data from the organization, at least 165 of its workers have died in Gaza due to Israel attacks.
