The scientific institution explained in its most recent report on El Niño that, during February and early March, the sea surface temperature on the continental and insular coast of the Andean country was two degrees above the normal value, which influenced the climatic events that occurred throughout the national territory.
According to the document, so far in 2024, 1,150 dangerous events of hydrometeorological origin have been recorded in 23 Ecuadorian provinces, affecting 125,529 people.
Although rains are usual at this time of the year here, the El Niño phenomenon causes an unusual and anomalous increase in sea temperature, which generates heavy rainfall in the national territory, mainly in coastal areas.
