The Austrian lawyer wrote on his X profile, “We welcome the important step taken by France, which has become the first nation to constitutionally guarantee access to abortion.”
The French Parliament ratified the inclusion of that right, a reform that was described as historic, after a vote in the two Chambers: the Senate and the National Assembly.
The bill, previously approved in both forums, will be promulgated by French President Emmanuel Macron on March 8, on International Women’s Day.
In this regard, the UN human rights chief recalled that unsafe abortion is one of the root causes of maternal mortality, and call for the treatment and protection of the right to safe and legal abortion as a human rights issue.
