Ethiopia presented transitional justice policy to UN Council

Addis Ababa, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Justice Minister Gedion Timotheos reportedly presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, the measures adopted by his government to ensure accountability in the country.

In a recorded speech at the 55th regular session of the Council, Timotheos underscored his government’s commitment to making the transitional justice policy inclusive, victim-centered, and transparent, Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported.

The minister addressed the preparations made so far and noted that independent experts submitted a comprehensive report and draft policy to the local Ministry of Justice.

The official stated that once the draft is validated by stakeholders, it will be submitted to the Council of Ministers.

Timotheos thanked the East Africa Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission for their support throughout the process.

He reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to resolving differences peacefully.

Within the context of transitional justice, criminal charges will be brought against civilian and military leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, for the crimes committed during the armed conflict with the government, that ended on November 2, 2022, following the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
