Food security and nutrition situation is getting worse as a result of the effects of climate change, insecurity, steep food and fuel prices, according to OCHA.

OCHA estimates that the number of food insecure people during the upcoming lean season – from June to August – could hit 2.9 million people, accounting for 17% of total population.

This week, the UN announced the inclusion of Chad in the list of seven nations benefiting from additional funding from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

Along with Sudan, Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Niger, Lebanon and Honduras, Chad will be receiving USD$15 million even though the Agency itself acknowledged the pressing need for more funding to face the situation and prevent further decline.

During 2023, the UN received less than 40% of the USD$56.7 billion needed to sustain humanitarian appeals worldwide.

The Emergency Fund, on the other hand, raised in 2023 the lowest amount in five years, so its life-saving impact faces serious challenges.
