Cuba maintains vigilance against acute respiratory infections

Havana, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Covid-19 disease remains under control in Cuba, which decreased during 2023 the diagnosis of cases by 97,8%, meaning 142,380 fewer cases compared to 2022, Granma newspaper reported.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Dr. Carilda Peña, explained to the newspaper that in the last 10 weeks of last year, an average of 4,2 cases were diagnosed in the Caribbean country; and there was also a decrease in serious cases.

She highlighted that in 2023 there were no deaths from this cause, and the accumulated lethality was 0,76%, below that reported in the region of the Americas.

The official explained that in the time elapsed of the current year there is a similar behavior, with a slight increase in the number of diagnosed cases, 7,7 on average per week.

Through the genomic surveillance of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine in Havana, it is known that the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the infection, predominates in the confirmed cases studied, with around 15 subvariants during 2023 and so far in 2024, coinciding with those prevailing in the region and in other parts of the world, she added.
