Hummingbird to be declared Costa Rica’s national symbol

San José, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) The hummingbird (trochilidae) will be declared Costa Rica's national symbol and will integrate a list of 19 insignias of the flora, fauna, customs and traditions that characterize its natural and cultural wealth, it was reported here.

The Legislative Assembly approved in a first debate, by a majority of 44 lawmakers, the bill that will establish this species as a new national symbol.

To argue the proposal, it was recalled that Costa Rica has 53 registered species that inhabit the territory, making the hummingbird the second most diverse bird species.

Its habitats range from ecosystems in the plains to forests, volcanoes and high altitude moors; even, of the country’s two native species, one inhabits exclusively in the mangroves of Osa and Nicoya.

The legislative institution stressed that Costa Rica’s great diversity of hummingbirds is a reflection of the abundance of flowering plants in the country, making this beautiful bird a very important pollinator.

In addition, the beauty of its colors and vibrant movements are an attraction for national and international tourists.
