The 44th ordinary session of African Union Executive Council began

UA-Consejo
Addis Ababa, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina) The debates of the 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) will be focused on strategic decisions on trade, peace and security, education, climate change, agricultural development, women and youth, including other topics.

The meeting will take place for two days before the 37th AU Summit on February 17th and 18th, and is considered essential for the growth of the continent and the promotion of the 2030 Agenda of the AU.

As part of the preparation for this summit, the 47th ordinary session of the Committee of Permanent Representatives was held from January 15TH to 26TH, during which the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, demanded more actions to face conflicts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mahamat considered that these conflicts, and other issues on a global scale, allow us to have a balance on the fragmentation of the world.

“The only resource Africa has in the face of the challenges of our time is its unity and solidarity. A unity that we build with perseverance and tolerance, in a cooperative effort that transcends particularities, neutralizes considerations contrary to the general interest, and constantly inspired by mutual understanding,” he expressed.

As done before, the chairman called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Palestine and challenged the international community to give concrete form to the two-state solution as a way out to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. “The conflict is developing with indescribable intensity, giving rise to humanitarian tragedies of unprecedented magnitude, characterized by a flagrant disregard for international law and international humanitarian law,” he stressed.

He also denounced the bombings against Palestinian civilians, the systematic destruction of their lives, their means of existence, and the trivialization of death, all these anomalies combine in a tragedy that has already lasted for a hundred days. “This unprecedented tragedy shakes the African conscience, he stressed.

The annual meeting of African leaders will question the progress made in addressing the worrying security situation and conflicts in some of its Member States and will offer recommendations on innovative ways to sustainably address crises in a bid to return to peace.
