Argentine court to hold hearing on anti-protest protocol

Celeste-Fierro
Buenos Aires, Feb 14 (Prensa Latina) The Federal Criminal and Correctional Court 7 of Argentina will host a hearing on an anti-protest protocol applied by the Ministry of Security against protesters.

The event was convened after Left Front deputy Celeste Fierro filed the complaint.

Fierro and authorities from the Ministry of Security must appear; social organizations and human rights defenders are also expected to hold a rally around the court house to express their rejection of the Government’s measures.

Last week, federal judge Sebastián Casanello required that Secretary of Security Patricia Bullrich present a report detailing the legal foundations of the regulations, and asked that the actions of law enforcement comply with the limits established by the Constitution.

Casanello demanded “to explain the grounds considered for adopting the guidelines included in the Protocol for the maintenance of public order in the event of the closure of traffic routes, and whether there was an adequate examination of international human rights standards.”

He also requested information on whether “complaints were received regarding excesses in the exercise of the functions of the federal police and security forces in compliance with such guidelines, making it known what measures were carried out accordingly.”

Recently, members of social and union groups gathered around Congress to reject a package of laws debated by the Chamber of Deputies. The Federal Police, the motorized police, the Gendarmerie, and the Prefecture attacked the protesters using batons, tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets. More than 20 people were arrested and dozens were injured, including 30 journalists.
