The tremor was registered off the coast of Sonsonate, 72 kilometers south of Los Cóbanos beach, and occurred at 7:53 am (local time), at a depth of 50 kilometers.
Authorities attribute the earth tremor to the process of subduction and accommodation of the Cocos and Caribbean plates.
The MARN report specified that due to the characteristics of the earthquake, there is no threat of tsunami.
