Uruguay between El Niño and La Niña

Montevideo, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) In less than 24 hours the thermometer dropped 10 degrees Celsius in this capital, a sign of the climatic variations that Uruguay is facing today.

The forecasts of the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) predict the persistence of the heat wave, which recorded suffocating temperatures and more than a hundred fires in Montevideo and nearby areas, although the day before was another story.

At least in this city, the drop in temperatures made many people go out to the parks and to the Rambla in front of Río de la Plata.

Last Friday the scene was, beaches of Montevideo full of vacationers, despite the alert of high solar radiation.

It is a changing story due to the recurrent changes in temperature, in a country that has in restaurants and cafés, time for tea, far away from the United Kingdom and with more coffee, cookies, sandwiches, and croissants. What did not change for almost three years here was the persistent drought in 2023 that deserved an agricultural emergency for the whole territory.

In addition, their is another water emergency for the Metropolitan Zone, which includes the department of Montevideo and areas of Canelones and San José.

Last year, the drought caused agricultural and livestock losses over US$ 1.8 billion.
