Paraguay continues research despite enhancing student nutrition

Asuncion, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) The Paraguayan government on Tuesday announced that it will keep scientific, educational and technical research even if Congress approves a bill proposed on Monday by the Executive to allocate substantial funds to improve nutrition at schools.

The ¨Zero-Hunger¨ project implies not suspending studies of the Fund for Excellence in Education and Research, which, in turn, finances the National Council of Science and Technology, the Education and Science Minister Luis Ramírez told to radio Monumental 1080.

Such projects will go on, the minister added in response to concerns about the elimination of the National Fund for Public Investment and Development (FONACIDE), which will be replaced by the School Food Fund (FONAE) to finance student lunch.

All projects “of clear interest and which contribute to education” must be maintained with the State budget, the Minister added while alluding to finances goal-oriented to Zero Hunger, an initiative which will be benefitting 1,300,000 students during the 180 days of the school year.

Ramírez recalled that school food “contributes to poverty mitigation” but admitted the usefulness of these actions not being within the portfolio. “I am not saying that it does not have to be a governing body,” he stressed, “but I think it is good that this management is outside it.
