Labor minister defends hourly workday in Ecuador

Quito, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) The Minister of Labor of Ecuador, Ivonne Nuñez, defended today the application of the hourly workday here, to formalize workers in the informal sector and incorporate the unemployed.

In an interview offered to the digital portal Primicias, Nuñez revealed that, if the inclusion of the hourly contract is approved by referendum, the working hour would have a minimum value of 1.92 dollars, plus the values corresponding to legal benefits.

On the other hand, he clarified, the fixed contract, which is also proposed in the referendum, would be focused on promoting investment in small businesses or enterprises.

To speak of precariousness in the hourly contract is to demonize it, she emphasized.

The hourly contract incorporates into the labor market the unemployed and people who have an informal job, we want to give the possibility of working for hours to people who can provide a service or a specialized job, she said.
