Belize’s authorities warn of measures to regulate digital media

Belmopan, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) Belize's Minister of Public Service and Constitutional Reform Henry Charles Usher warned Monday of the need for legislative action to regulate digital media, to grant the rights and integrity of citizens.

Regarding the case of an alleged sexual assault involving two women and a high-profile lawyer, the official was concerned over the lack of accountability of digital platforms and their possible influence on public perception and justice.

In that regard, the Belizean Government member expressed that relevant legislation should be enacted soon in reference to a policy drafted last year by the Belize Broadcasting Authority, which addresses the proper control in the use and management of social media.

Usher highlighted the situation’s seriousness by referring to a video of the night of the alleged incident, which was posted on a blog most watched across the country, so that it could potentially intimidate witnesses and deter other victims from coming forward for fear of being attacked in the online arena.

The minister urged government agencies to take measures to regulate the impact of the media, and stressed the need for a thorough and impartial investigation by his administration, which he assured is committed to guaranteeing that justice prevails.
