The legislators asked the president of the upper house of Congress, Victoria Villarruel, to hold a special session on February 1st, but despite being the first minority (33 seats), UP needs the support of four more legislators to reach the necessary quorum.
The head of the UP inter-bloc, José Mayans, issued statements to the press pointing out that DNU 70/2023 must be dealt with immediately in Congress, and assured that the massive mobilization carried out on Wednesday by unions and social organizations confirms the discontent of the people with the initiative.
Senator Martín Doñate stated that all the deadlines for the administrative and legal procedure in Parliament have already been met and exhausted.
The DNU was published in the Official Gazette on December 21st and reforms or repeals over 300 regulations, including the privatization of state companies, the deregulation of the economy and labor reform, among other actions.
The DNU will be in force as long as it is not rejected by the absolute majority of both chambers. If one of them approves it or Congress does not express itself, it will remain in force.
