African Bank granted a credit to Mauritania for energy

Abidjan (Prensa Latina) Mauritania has a credit for 272 million dollars from the African Development Bank (AfDB) for investments in electricity connection with Mali, according to a commitment signed in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian capital.

For the same purpose, the AfDB granted a $1.5 million grant, according to agreements signed in Nouakchott by the Mauritanian Minister of Economy, Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, and the Deputy Director General of the AfDB’s Regional Development and Service Delivery Office for North Africa, Malinne Blomberg.

The financing will support works related to the Mauritania-Mali electricity interconnection and associated solar power plants, Saleh said during the ceremony.

According to Blomberg, this is a strategic investment aimed at strengthening the development of solar energy production and universal access to electricity.

In July 2023, several countries and multilateral agencies pledged $600 million to finance a high-voltage line between the two neighboring states, the Mauritanian Ministry of Economic Affairs said in a statement at the time.

According to the ministry, the project will cost a total of US$1 billion, will make it possible to electrify major cities in both countries and will benefit more than 620,000 people.
