The incident -which keeps the Haitian religious community distressed- occurred on January 19 when the bus that was transporting them to a university was attacked in the center of Port-au-Prince by armed individuals, who also took away a professor accompanying them and the driver.
Media citing Radio Télé Métronome stated that the kidnappers demand the sum of three million dollars for his release.
Pope Francis expressed on Sunday before tens of thousands of faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square that: “I received with pain the news of the kidnapping, in Haiti, of a group of people, including six nuns.”
His holiness strongly requested their release, and commented that he prays for social harmony in the Caribbean country and invited everyone to put an end to the violence, which causes so much suffering in the population.
In this painful moment, the office of the Haitian Conference of Religious (CDH) encouraged all Christians in Haiti to form a prayer chain.
“We firmly condemn this atrocious and criminal act, as well as all the unpunished kidnappings in the country, which outrage the population. These actions tarnish the image of the country, already affected by numerous recurring evils,” underlines a statement from the CDH.
We appeal to the conscience of the kidnappers and ask them in the name of God to release unconditionally and unharmed the people who they plagiarized.
“Let them stop trampling on the inalienable dignity of the children of God!” “In the name of God, whom you must fear, stop these despicable and criminal practices that contaminate this sacred land that God has given us!” says the CDH statement.
