In a statement, Mahamat revealed that the panel will be chaired by the AU High Representative for Weapons Silencing, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, with former Ugandan President Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe and former Special Representative of the President in Somalia and head of the AU Mission in Somalia, Francisco Madeira as members.
The appointment, effective immediately, is in line with the conclusion of the political organization’s Peace and Security Council last year and in fulfillment of the mandate and determination to consolidate peace and stability on the continent, the text specified.
Members of the AU high-level panel will work with all Sudanese stakeholders, including civilian forces, military belligerents and regional and global actors such as the Intergovernment Authority on Development, the UN and the League of Arab States to ensure an inclusive process.
The latter, towards the speedy restoration of peace, constitutional order and stability in Khartoum.
While thanking the eminent personalities for agreeing to serve the African Union in this important task, Mahamat called on everyone in Sudan and the international community to provide the necessary cooperation and support for the successful performance of the panel.
