Chinese population reduced by two million people during 2023

Beijing, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) China reduced its population by 2.08 million people during 2023, but maintained a figure above 1.4 billion inhabitants, official sources reported today.

Kang Yi, director of the National Bureau of Statistics (NSO), said that at the end of the year, the population was around 1.41 billion citizens.

This count includes 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government and active military personnel, but excludes residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

The number of newborns stood at 9.02 million, with a birth rate of 6.39 per 1,000 population. On the other hand, the number of deaths reached 11.1 million, with a mortality rate of 7.87 per 1,000 population.

The executive emphasized that the natural population growth rate was -1.48 per 1,000 people.

Regarding the age composition, the working age population from 16 to 59 years old was 864.81 million, which represents 61.3 percent of all the country’s citizens.

The number of seniors aged 60 and above, on the other hand, reached 296.97 million, 21.1 percent of the national population.

Kang explained that the permanent urban dwellers stood at 932.67 million, an increase of 11.96 million from the end of 2022.

In this regard, the ratio of urban population to national population (urbanization rate) was 66.16 percent, an increase of 0.94 percentage points year-on-year.

Other data offered by the NSO have to do with the country’s economic performance in 2023 and the unemployment rate in the Asian giant.
