Colombian President cancels participation in Davos Forum

Bogota, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro canceled his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which is being held from January 25-20, the Communications Office of the Presidency reported on Monday.

The change in the President’s agenda was due to a delay in Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo’s inauguration ceremony, which should have taken place on Sunday afternoon but it was finally held in the early hours of Monday morning.

From the Guatemalan capital, where he went as a guest, Petro noted that his delegation would remain there until Arévalo received the official appointment as head of State of that Central American country.

“I will be in Guatemala City. The Colombian delegation will not leave until President Arévalo is sworn in (…) The Attorney General’s Office has been the orchestrator of a coup d’état. The Congress has hindered the inauguration of the elected president. The Constitutional Court is ready to defend democracy and the popular vote,” he warned in his X account on Sunday.

Petro also anticipated that, if necessary, he would suspend his trip to Switzerland, where he had planned to participate in the meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

According to the information released by Casa de Nariño, the cancellation is due to changes in the schedule and, once the respective consultation with Swiss authorities for the flight plans was made, they confirmed that it was no longer possible for the presidential plane to land, so they had to wait to start the trip.

Due to such a delay, President Petro could not be present in the main part of the agenda of the World Economic Forum.

Due to the new situation, the ministers of Finance, Mines and Commerce will head the Colombian delegation to the event, according to reports.
