Located between India and China, Bhutan, with a total population of about 770,000, has a unique two-round electoral system.
The first round of the elections was held in November 2023, in which the ruling Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) party came in fourth place and was subsequently disqualified.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP), which are currently vying to receive the keys to the parliament, face leading challenges such as boosting the country’s economy, according to experts.
