Extreme security and tense calm in Bangladesh´s elections

Dhaka, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) In the midst of a tense calm and a strong security device the twelfth elections of Jatiya Sangsad (JS), the supreme legislative body of the country, are being held in Bangladesh.

Simultaneously, 42,024 polling stations opened nationwide in 299 electoral districts, with the exception of the one located in Naogaon-2 due to the death of the independent candidate Aminul Islam, the news agency Bangladesh Sangsbad Sangsthad (BSS) informed.

Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission sent the ballots to all polling stations as scheduled.

Similarly, Bangladeshi Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina cast her vote in Dhaka, the capital, along with family members, as did the organization’s secretary general Obaidul Quader and chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, among others.

More than 113 million voters are registered to exercise their right to vote to elect 299 members of Parliament who will decide whether or not to establish a new government.

A total of 1,969 candidates, including 1,533 from 28 parties and 436 independents, are competing in the elections.

Hundreds of thousands of officers of the Electoral Commission, three thousand executive and judicial magistrates, and more than 800 thousand law enforcement officers and members of the armed forces are watching over the peaceful and smooth running of the elections.
